About the collection
Read the three historical volumes published under The Secret Doctrine title in one collection of prepared digital editions. H. P. Blavatsky’s writing ranges across cosmic origins, human nature, religious symbolism and occult philosophy. The set gives readers a way to follow those connections across volumes without having to work through faded page scans.
The publication history is important. Blavatsky published Volumes I and II in 1888. Volume III appeared in 1897, after her death, when Annie Besant arranged and edited surviving papers. It is included here as that posthumous publication, not presented as a third volume completed and issued by Blavatsky alongside the first two. Besant’s historical preface and contributions remain distinct from the modern HIPS Books guides.
Volume I, Cosmogenesis, considers the origins and order of the universe through the seven Stanzas of Dzyan and their commentaries. Its recurrent subjects include cosmic cycles, spirit and matter, consciousness, number symbolism and comparisons between religious traditions. The Proem’s three propositions give readers a useful entry point before the much longer discussions.
Volume II, Anthropogenesis, turns to Blavatsky’s account of humanity. It discusses the awakening of mind, myth, human development, Lemuria and Atlantis, and her Root-Race scheme. These are parts of a historical Theosophical cosmology, not a record of prehistory established by modern anthropology or geology. The volume contains dated racial theories and potentially offensive descriptions of peoples and cultures. They are retained for critical historical study, not endorsed.
Volume III gathers papers on initiation, religious interpretation, alphabets and numbers, symbolism and occult systems. Its later material considers human principles, consciousness and the bearing of occult philosophy on life. The sequence includes Besant’s preface, an introduction, Sections I–LI, the later esoteric papers, appendix and notes on oral teachings. Its posthumous arrangement helps explain why it reads differently from the earlier volumes.
Across the set, HIPS Books provides vocabulary help, summaries and reflection questions while retaining the authors’ historical wording. Linked contents and notes make it easier to move between passages, and the matching covers keep the three editions recognisable as a series. You receive separate files, so you can read one volume at a time or compare a theme across them. This is a historical reading collection, not a claim that its occult or scientific arguments are verified modern knowledge.

Before you buy
How is this different from an archive scan?
An archive scan preserves photographed pages. This is a prepared reading edition: reset text and modern reading support, with the historical author’s words kept distinct. The edition details and preview pages above show what is included in this particular book.
What will I receive, and where do I buy it?
