About the book
Thought-Forms is Annie Besant and C. W. Leadbeater’s illustrated 1901 study of a central Theosophical idea: that thought and emotion leave visible forms in subtle matter. Its remarkable colour plates give shape to affection, devotion, pride, fear, anger, ambition, helpful thoughts and music. The book became one of the most recognisable visual documents of early twentieth-century Theosophy, joining spiritual vocabulary to the period’s language of vibration, colour and force.
Besant and Leadbeater describe their illustrations as records of clairvoyant investigation. They connect the colour, outline and movement of a form with the quality and intensity of a thought, and argue that mental activity affects both the thinker and other people. Those are historical Theosophical claims; they are not established scientific findings, medical guidance or evidence that thoughts can diagnose or treat illness.
This HIPS Books reader’s edition follows the 1925 reprint of the 1901 text. It preserves the original foreword, colour chart, historical illustrations and three music plates, while adding a vocabulary, clickable contents, reading guidance, editorial reader’s guides and reflection questions. The new material is clearly labelled so readers can follow the historical text in its own terms and assess its ideas with context.

Inside the book: selected contents
A reading overview, not the complete text.
- The Difficulty of Representation: why the authors think ordinary pictures cannot fully convey the forms they claim to see.
- The Two Effects of Thought; How the Vibration Acts: thought is described as producing both a form and a radiating influence.
- The Meaning of the Colours: colour becomes a language for interpreting states of feeling and thought.
- Illustrative Thought-Forms: affection, devotion, intellect, anger, sympathy and fear are discussed alongside images.
- Meditation, Helpful Thoughts and Forms Built by Music: the later sections apply the framework to contemplation, assistance and musical works.
These sections present Besant and Leadbeater’s Theosophical interpretation, not scientifically verified pictures of thoughts.

- Clairvoyance: a claimed perception beyond ordinary senses, on which their account depends.
- Music forms: visual representations of the effects they attribute to particular musical compositions.
