Charles Lathrop Pack led the National War Garden Commission during the First World War. His 1919 book The War Garden Victorious records and advocates the American war-garden movement, following community plots, school gardens and the organisations that supported them. Pack’s account is a participant’s perspective on wartime food production and conservation. The HIPS Books edition also includes the two historical gardening and preservation pamphlets bound into the volume. Their period instructions are retained for study, not offered as modern food-safety or pesticide guidance.
