About the collection
Before modern household refrigeration, keeping a harvest or a supply of meat involved a different set of routines, tools and assumptions. This collection brings three historical food-preservation works back into readable form. They offer a view of what writers taught about winter vegetables, curing and household fruit preparation between 1864 and 1917.
The shortest work is the National Emergency Food Garden Commission’s Manual for Home Storage, Pickling, Fermentation and Salting Vegetables (1917). At eighteen pages in this prepared edition, it is a compact First World War-era booklet rather than a large general manual. Its topics include cellar and pit storage, potato starch, cabbage fermentation, pickling, staples and fruit pastes. The wartime appeal to avoid waste gives the practical discussion its setting.
The Art and Mystery of Curing, Preserving, and Potting Meats, Game, and Fish was published in London in 1864. Its preface is signed J. R., Junior; this edition does not invent a full name for that credit. The 107-page reader’s edition follows a Victorian collection of salting, smoking, pickling and potting methods, with further material on fruit and vegetables. Historical quantities and recipe language remain part of the record, not instructions that HIPS Books has updated for use.
Maria Parloa’s Canned Fruit, Preserves, and Jellies first appeared as USDA Farmers’ Bulletin No. 203 in 1904. The thirty-three-page edition here follows the substantive text of the 1917 printing, with original figures from the corrected 1905 printing. It covers fruit for the market, preserving principles, utensils, syrups, canning, preserves and jellies. Its different publication dates are identified rather than collapsed into a misleading single year.
Newly typeset text and clearly marked reader guides help you compare the works without treating them as one modern cookbook. The vegetable booklet adds five new colour plates, the curing book twelve, and Parloa’s work five alongside its five historical figures. The new coloured-pencil-style images are interpretive AI-assisted artwork, not original-era illustrations or tested preservation diagrams. Their purpose is to accompany reading, not to validate a process.
These books are historical documents for research and interest, not current food-safety instructions. Some methods and ingredients are unsafe today, particularly for shelf-stable vegetables, meat and fish. Do not use their old canning, oven-processing, wax-sealing or curing directions as tested recipes. Before preparing or storing food, consult current research-tested guidance from a qualified authority such as the National Center for Home Food Preservation. The collection preserves the historical record while keeping that boundary explicit.

Before you buy
How is this different from an archive scan?
An archive scan preserves photographed pages. This is a prepared reading edition: reset text and modern reading support, with the historical author’s words kept distinct. The edition details and preview pages above show what is included in this particular book.
What will I receive, and where do I buy it?
This listing is a collection of separate digital PDF books, not a single merged volume. The Etsy listing is the place to check the current PDF price and delivery details, and to complete your purchase. Payment and digital delivery are handled by Etsy.
Can I read or print the PDF?
You can read a PDF in a compatible viewer on a computer or tablet. Check the Etsy listing and the edition’s terms for printing permissions and paper size before buying. PDF support and navigation vary by device; this is not an EPUB or a physical copy.
