About the book

What did early Theosophists believe a human being looked like beyond the physical body? In Man Visible and Invisible (1902), C. W. Leadbeater describes a series of bodies, colours and forms that he claimed could be seen through trained clairvoyance. The illustrations give visual form to that account: emotions and stages of spiritual development are represented as changes in colour and shape.

This makes the book a useful companion to Annie Besant’s Man and His Bodies and to Thought-Forms, which Besant and Leadbeater wrote together. The books overlap, but they are not interchangeable. Man Visible and Invisible organizes its pictures around Leadbeater’s account of the person and the aura, while Thought-Forms concentrates on the shapes attributed to thoughts, feelings and music.

The opening chapters explain his larger framework before the later examples turn to particular emotional conditions and types of character. Following that order helps make sense of images that otherwise look like a collection of unrelated coloured clouds. His colour key is part of his interpretive system, not a scientifically validated diagnostic chart.

The HIPS edition contains all 26 numbered illustrations: the colour key, three diagrams and 22 other colour plates. Historical artist credits include Count Maurice Prozor and Gertrude Spink. These images are historical illustrations, not photographs of measured fields, medical scans or demonstrations that the supposed bodies exist. The two plates supplied from cleaner later historical reproductions are identified in the edition rather than passed off as newly drawn originals.

The reading text follows the London 1902 printing. Five missing pages are supplied from an early 1903 New York copy, with that decision recorded. The Author’s Note and twenty chapters are retained, alongside labelled title, contents and illustration-list facsimiles. Modern vocabulary, chapter guides and a glossary help readers follow the claims and compare them with the pictures without confusing the commentary with Leadbeater’s text.

Some of the book’s classifications depend on racist and colonial-era spiritual hierarchies. They are preserved as evidence of the period, not as valid judgments about human worth. Claims about clairvoyance, health and unseen bodies likewise remain historical claims. The edition is intended for critical reading of Theosophical literature and its imagery, not aura diagnosis or medical advice.
